Surface Water Management Rate Study Analysis - Share Your Opinion!

*Take our 1 question survey [ https://speakupkenmore.com/swm-rate-increase ] about proposed Surface Water Management fees over the next six years and how they impact funding for projects that improve our local streams, such as unblocking local culverts for fish passage.*

Kenmore's Surface Water Management (SWM) program is responsible for managing all surface water functions in Kenmore, including flood prevention and management, water quality improvement, and fish and wildlife habitat restoration, just to name a few. Kenmore recently received the results of a SWM rate analysis to establish proposed SWM rates for residential and commercial property owners for 2024-2030.

On September 18, 2023, the Kenmore City Council reviewed four SWM funding scenarios developed through the rate analysis, which provide options for how many SWM projects the City can fund and implement between 2024-2030. And now, the City Council would like to hear from you! Please visit the brief online survey to read through the four scenarios and answer a short one question survey to let the City Council know your preferred option. The City Council will reconvene on October 16, 2023 to determine which option to move forward with. The survey [ https://speakupkenmore.com/swm-rate-increase ] will be open until October 1, and can be completed anonymously.

trees [ https://www.kenmorewa.gov/government/departments/development-services/permits/trees ]
City Council Will Consider Adopting New Exceptional Tree Ordinance in October

At its October 9 meeting, Kenmore City Council is expected to adopt an exceptional tree ordinance. The proposed ordinance protects extraordinary trees, defined as native trees and other very large trees that because of their unique combination of size and age are worthy of retention. Exceptional trees are exceedingly important to the local environment and community as they reduce soil erosion and pollution in streams and creeks, remove pollutant gases and airborne particles, lower temperatures, reduce noise pollution, and provide habitat for wildlife. Upon adoption of the ordinance, removal of any trees it protects as exceptional anywhere within the city will be punishable by fines up to $2,500 per inch in diameter at breast height with minimum a penalty of $10,000 and a maximum of $150,000.

Climate Action Plan Community Engagement and a Path Forward

Climate Action Plan (CAP) staff have been busy this summer and fall engaging the community at several events to learn more about the community's priorities for CAP implementation. Earlier this month, a well attended CAP workshop was held to get important input from the public on those priorities. Additionally, Kenmore collaborated with Shoreline and Lake Forest Park to host a home electrification educational series to help residents navigate solar, heat pumps, and induction stoves, and CAP booths were present at a handful of Farmers Markets and Kenmore’s 25th Anniversary Celebration. Next, all the feedback will be used to form a path forward for climate action and these recommendations will be presented at an upcoming Council meeting in October.

The exhibition will be on display in October and will culminate in a magnificent film screening on October 13, 6:30 pm to 8 pm at City Hall, to showcase the award-winning documentary "Straight Off the Canvas".
