SDOT Kicks Off Construction of Alaskan Way Safety Project [ https://sdotblog.seattle.gov/2024/12/20/alaskan-way-safety-project-construction-begins/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]

* We have started construction on the Alaskan Way Safety Project [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/programs/bike-program/protected-bike-lanes/alaskan-way-protected-bike-lane?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ], a collaborative partnership with the Port of Seattle and Cascade Bicycle Club.
* Construction started on December 2, with completion expected in summer 2025.
* The project will improve safety, accessibility, and connectivity along Seattle’s central waterfront for people who walk, bike, and drive. Key features include:
* *Protected Bike Lane*: A 0.6-mile, two-way protected bike lane will be installed on the west side of Alaskan Way, between Virginia St and Broad St, providing a safer route for people who bike.
* *Safer Traffic Design*: Alaskan Way will be reduced to two lanes (one in each direction), aligning with SDOT’s Vision Zero goals to reduce speeding and improve safety for people who walk and bike, while maintaining necessary freight access.
* *Intersection Safety Upgrades*: Modifications will include pedestrian head start walk signals, bike-specific signals, No Turn on Red signs, and improvements to pedestrian crossings to enhance safety and visibility.
* *Improved Accessibility*: Sidewalk repairs and new ADA-accessible curb ramps will be implemented to improve access for people who walk and people who use mobility devices

NE 130th & 125th St project reaches final design, supporting connections to future light rail  [ https://sdotblog.seattle.gov/2024/12/11/130th-125th-project-reaches-final-design/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]

* With a new Sound Transit Link light rail station at NE 130th St near I-5 scheduled to open in 2026, we’re planning for key transit, bike, and pedestrian improvements to provide safer and more efficient access for everyone traveling between Haller Lake and Lake City.
* Multiple SDOT projects between Bitter Lake and Lake City will support greater access to the future station, with street and sidewalk safety upgrades for people traveling in these neighborhoods. Learn more about this series of projects on our website [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/current-projects/ne-130th-st-light-rail-station-access-and-safety-improvements?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ].
* This blog post focuses on the NE 130th St & NE 125th St Mobility and Safety Project [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/programs/transportation-planning/ne-130th-and-125th-mobility-and-safety-project?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ], which just reached the final design milestone.
* Thanks to everyone who stopped by our events, met with the project team, and shared your feedback. Construction continues on the RapidRide J Line project [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/programs/transit-program/transit-plus-multimodal-corridor-program/rapidride-roosevelt?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]

* The RapidRide J Line project will bring significant improvements to the University District, Eastlake, South Lake Union, and Belltown neighborhoods.
* These enhancements will make it easier to commute, attend classes at the University of Washington, access medical care, or visit local businesses by creating a more efficient and convenient travel experience across these key areas of the city.
* Our focus is on modernizing and maintaining reliable transit connections for Seattle’s growing communities. We will improve roads, sidewalks, curb ramps, lighting, drainage, and traffic signals.
* Additionally, we will install protected bike lanes and replace the watermain on Eastlake Ave E. These enhancements are essential for supporting local businesses, improving access to housing, and fostering vibrant, connected communities.
* In December, we progressed on stormwater work on Eastlake Ave E. Crews are upgrading stormwater drainage on Eastlake Ave E at E Allison St which will improve the area's ability to manage rainfall.
