Innovative Approach to Pandemic Learning Loss

*A Partnership Between the City of Kenmore and Cascadia College*

*KENMORE, Wash.* – The City of Kenmore and Cascadia College are launching an innovative program this fall to alleviate learning loss that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic’s disruptions in education.

“This is a terrific opportunity to provide students with additional support,” says Janet Quinn, Management Analyst for the City of Kenmore. “We see lingering impacts of the pandemic across the board but students from historically underrepresented communities have been especially hard hit. Classes designed to increase skills in reading and math will help students whether they are headed to college or the workforce.”

This new partnership between Kenmore and Cascadia, which was made possible using federal grant money from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) will bring approximately 100 Kenmore juniors and seniors from area high schools to the Cascadia campus in Bothell every Wednesday on early release days beginning this fall quarter for academic classes designed to help students cover content they missed during the pandemic. It will culminate with a two-week summer academy in 2024.

Cascadia’s Executive Director for Equity & Inclusion, Chari Davenport, said, “While younger students have time to catch up on their learning, we know that juniors and seniors do not have this same opportunity.”

The summer academy will focus on math and English while also including workshops on important skills such as time management, stress management, study skills, and information literacy.

“We are deeply grateful to the City of Kenmore and Cascadia College for their unwavering support of our Northshore students,” says Superintendent Michael Tolley. “Innovative partnerships like this will help the district address many of the challenges our students faced and continue to navigate because of the pandemic. Together, we will ensure students thrive and have the opportunity to pursue their dreams.”

"*About Cascadia College*:" Cascadia College is a comprehensive community college that specializes in university transfer education. It is nationally recognized for its high transfer rate and for its emphasis on collaborative and active learning across disciplines. It was established by the legislature to serve the higher education needs of Northeast King and South Snohomish counties.
