*What's Happening in Westlake?*
This week, we have six key construction updates to share:
* *Preparing for final restoration at N Halladay St and Westlake Ave* Crews are currently coordinating to install a temporary connection for street lighting on Westlake. Once this is complete, most likely in late February or early March, conduit work will be finished, and installation of sidewalks will commence. This work includes curb ramps on both sides of Westlake and the parking lot on the east side of the street for the new crosswalk. The trenches crossing Westlake and the parking lot are currently backfilled and patched paved. Once the weather warms up, crews will return to complete the final paving restoration at these locations. Folks can expect lane restrictions and some minor delays through the area.
* *Preparing for final restoration at Crockett St*
Crews are wrapping up the updates at Crockett St. Crewmembers will lay down new striping to complete the final step of this construction later this year when warmer weather arrives so striping will adhere to the new roadway properly.
* *Sidewalk upgrades near 8th Ave N and N Galer St*
Crews will demolish and upgrade sidewalks near 8th Ave N and N Galer St on Westlake Ave. Expect detours for pedestrians and wheelchair users, as well as temporary lane restrictions. Crews will work on select corners at a time to maintain crosswalk access. This work is tentatively scheduled to take around two weeks but winter weather is always capable of shifting the schedule.
* *New pedestrian curb ramps* are being installed near the Westlake Cycle Track. This will allow rollers and cyclists easy approaches and access to this important path.
* *Preparing for construction at Aloha St./9th Ave*
Crews are expected to mobilize into this location in the last week of February or early March. The work consists of trenching for fiber optic conduits from the intersection running north along the west side of the parking lot on the east side of Westlake. The purpose of this installation is to connect traffic signals along Westlake, allowing them to “talk” to each other and keep traffic moving more efficiently.
* *Pedestrian signal upgrades* and street improvements are moving forward, with work on sidewalks and crossings ongoing. We appreciate the Westlake neighborhood’s patience

Route 40 Ridership is on the Rise
Route 40 has over *8,500 average weekday daily boardings [ https://app.powerbigov.us/view?r=eyJrIjoiZDMwMWExOTMtOTY3ZC00MTU5LTgxMDgtODM4MTZiYTExMzJkIiwidCI6ImJhZTUwNTlhLTc2ZjAtNDlkNy05OTk2LTcyZGZlOTVkNjljNyJ9&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] *(Fall 2024) - an 11% increase from Fall 2023. It is the fifth (5th) highest ridership route in the Metro network.
Project Benefits
In addition to the 5-10% transit travel time savings, 14-17% in Ballard to Downtown, the Route 40 project will maintain and modernize vital infrastructure

What you can expect during construction
* Temporary lane reductions
* Temporary driveway closures
* Temporary bus stop closures
* Temporary parking restrictions
* Temporary sidewalk detours
* Temporary storage of construction supplies in the street
* Temporary noise, dust and vibrations
* Bus stop relocations
* Drainage work: This involves digging trenches to help manage water flow
* Signal pole foundation excavation: This work involves digging for the pole foundations prior to when we order custom signal poles which takes a while to build and to make sure we know there are no underground obstructions
* Trenching for conduit: This involves digging trenches to lay down pipes or cables underground
* Sidewalk curb bulb out: This involves making the curbs stick outward for safety or accessibility
* Mill and fill overlay: This is when the top layer of the road gets removed and replaced with new asphalt
The construction timeline is always subject to change depending on weather conditions and materials availability. We are committed to keeping you informed and maintaining open communication throughout the remainder of this project.To learn more about the project and designs, visit our online open house.
