*RapidRide G Line – Moving as many people as possible*

Project completion updates: February 28, 2025

Construction on the RapidRide G Line - Madison St project is nearly complete. In the coming months, you may notice occasional work, including landscaping, laying brick pavers at 1st Ave and 2nd Ave, and installing art panels behind the sidewalk over I-5. This work should not result in changes for people walking, biking, using mobility devices, taking the bus, or driving.

Here is our final project completion update:

*Moving as many people as possible: * Ridership on the G Line continues to rise. Daily boardings surpassed 5,000 on most weekdays throughout January, with the two-week rolling average reaching more than 5,100 as of January 31. This is a 41% increase compared to approximately 3,600 daily boardings averaged in the two weeks following the G Line's launch in September 2024.

*Reducing delays:* G Line service has improved its on-time arrivals since launch. SDOT adjusted traffic signals to help buses move faster, and King County Metro added more staff to keep buses running on time. Thanks to these updates, on-time arrivals increased from 57% in September 2024 to 83% in February, making your travel more reliable.

*
Center bus stations: * SDOT will replace the temporary steel plates with permanent pavement adjustments at three RapidRide G Line stops. These changes will continue to make it easier for riders using mobility devices to board the bus. The work will be finished later this year.

*Tunnel near 10th Ave:* Work to fill and seal an abandoned tunnel near 10th Ave is ongoing. Crews have set up supports and are getting ready to build a new retaining wall and fill in portions of the tunnel, ensuring safety and stability in the area.

Pedestrian detours remain in place, and westbound vehicle traffic continues to be open.

Public Art Installation: *A sculpture by local artist Ben Zamora [ https://www.benzamora.com/about?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] was installed at the intersection of Madison St, 14th Ave, and Pike St. This vibrant public art consists of multiple-colored frames that intend to echo the surrounding architecture and reflect the diversity of the nearby communities.  The plaza around the art was also installed, including a new sidewalk connection along the north side of Madison St between 14th Ave and Pike St.

Ben Zamora’s colorful sculpture now stands at Madison St, 14th Ave, and Pike St, celebrating community and architecture (SDOT).

Thank you for your engagement in the Madison St – G Line project and for your patience during construction. This project transformed Madison St to shift First Hill and Capitol Hill’s main street from moving as many cars as possible to moving as many people as possible.

In addition to 1.4 miles of red bus lanes for the new G Line, SDOT’s project fixed sidewalks, added new walk and bike signals, rebuilt utilities, and created a street design to keep traffic at slower, safer speeds next to schools, small businesses, libraries, and hospitals.

*Project Highlights *

* We built/replaced 3.8 miles of sidewalks

* We completed 9.1 lane-miles of concrete roadway and 2.3 lane-miles of new asphalt overlay.

* We added 1.4 miles of dedicated transit lanes

* We built 21 new RapidRide stops; 10 paired stops in each direction and one on First Avenue

* We built 4 new center-running stations between 7th and 13th Avenues

* We installed 5 new traffic signals and upgraded 36 existing signals

* We planted 108 new trees throughout the project area

Sincerely,

Trilce Villalobos, RapidRide G Line Outreach Lead
