Mayor's Update

September 1, 2023

Labor Day

________________________________________________________________________

Labor Day

Happy Friday Kent!

As a reminder: all city facilities including Kent City Hall, the Centennial Center, the Kent Commons, the Senior Activity Center, and Municipal Court will be closed this Monday in observance of Labor Day.

This federal holiday is a moment to reflect on and celebrate the progress and accomplishments of the labor movement and recognize workers across our county.

We owe our thanks to this movement for organizing in support of a minimum wage, workplace standards, health benefits and so much more.

I hope you enjoy this week's update and have a great Labor Day weekend!

Dana Ralph, Kent Mayor

Today is National Food Bank Day! The Kent Food Bank provides important resources to residents facing food insecurity in the Kent community and I am so thankful for the great work they do.

The Kent Food Bank is located in the Alliance Center in downtown Kent, home to social services offered by South County Area Human Services.

Kent has a rich history and ambitious future in space. Last week Economic and Community Development Program Manager Michelle Wilmont and I were at the Museum of Flight for the Space and Place event.

We heard from the filmmakers creating the documentary Jetpack City. The film will focus on the legacy of Washington State's space industry as well as it's future.

________________________________________________________________________

It was so much fun meeting the filmmakers, Sarah and Vasant Salcedo, and hearing their vision and passion for sharing this story. We also met one of the films technical advisors and Planetary Scientist, Dr. Tanya Harrison. Here's my favorite part- they are all Kentridge High School grads! Go Chargers!

This film is going to be amazing and will share what we already know- Kent and Washington have played and will continue to be a significant part of the advancement of space exploration.
