RapidRide J Line Construction News: February 14, 2025

The RapidRide J Line project will enhance transit access and improve travel in the University District, Eastlake, South Lake Union, and Belltown. Whether commuting, attending the University of Washington, receiving medical care, or visiting local businesses, this project will make getting around easier and more convenient.

Our goal is to maintain reliable transit connections for Seattle’s growing communities by upgrading roads, sidewalks, lighting, drainage, and traffic signals. We will also add protected bike lanes and replace the water main on Eastlake Ave E. These improvements will support local businesses, housing access, and connected, vibrant communities.

NE 43rd St closure shifting east in U District

We’re making progress on the water main replacement work on NE 43rd St. We expect to open NE 43rd Ave between NE Roosevelt Way and 11th Ave NE next week. Once this portion of the road opens, we’ll close NE 43rd between 11th Ave NE and 12th Ave NE to complete installation of the new water main in this area. Drivers will be detoured around the work via NE 45th St. Access to the alley between 11th Ave NE and 12th Ave NE will be closed at NE 43rd St. People can access the alleys from NE 45th St and NE 42nd St. Bike lanes on NE 43rd St between NE 11th and 12th will stay open.

After all water main work is complete, crews will repave both blocks of NE 43rd St. Repaving will require additional street closures.

Water Shutoffs at NE Roosevelt Way and NE 43rd Street

As part of our water main work in the U District, we will need to shut off water periodically for a short duration near NE 43rd St on Saturday, Feb. 15 between 1 – 4 PM. Crews will shut off water again on Sunday, Feb. 23. Sunday’s closure is tentatively scheduled from 2 - 6 PM but may change. SPU will notify properties ahead of any disruptions. Water shutdown information can be found on SPU’s website. Stormwater Work at E Roanoke St on Eastlake Ave E

We will complete stormwater drainage work and inlet installation work at Eastlake Ave E and E Roanoke St starting Tuesday, Feb. 18, weather permitting. This work will coincide with the mid-winter break for Seattle Public Schools. Doing the work now avoids drop-off and pick-up delays at nearby schools.
