Mental & Behavioral Health Counseling:

"A Partnership Between the City of Kenmore and Center for Human Services"

*KENMORE, Wash.* – The City of Kenmore and Center for Human Services [ https://www.chs-nw.org/ ] (CHS) launched a program this fall designed to treat mental and behavioral health issues resulting from or exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The service began at the start of the school year in September, and is available free to students and their families, regardless of insurance, income, or status.

This new partnership between Kenmore and CHS, made possible by the City’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds [ https://www.kenmorewa.gov/government/departments/city-manager-s-office/american-rescue-plan-act ], places a counselor at Inglemoor High School for the 2023-24 academic year. The counselor is engaging in outreach with the student body; collaborating with school personnel; assessing students’ mental health; providing individual, group, and family counseling to students and their families; and providing case management to assess, plan, implement, and monitor the options and services required to meet social, emotional, and health needs.

“The pandemic has had a profound and lasting impact on mental health,” says Garrett Oppenheim, Assistant to the City Manager, “and the City learned through extensive community outreach that residents are strongly supportive of using ARPA funds for a program like this."

The CHS counselor will be able to provide ongoing, in-depth therapy that goes beyond the services the school district is able to provide.

The City’s ARPA funding will continue to make the program possible through the 2024-25 school year and CHS is exploring options to continue it beyond that. “CHS receives limited human services funding from the City from their general funds and is licensed to provide behavioral health treatment to individuals with Medicaid,” says Beratta Gomillion, Executive Director of CHS, in describing how they plan to continue to serve the community after the ARPA funds are no longer available.

CHS [ https://www.chs-nw.org/ ] is a non-profit behavioral health organization that has served the greater community since 1970. They specialize in working with individuals of all ages who experience mental health or substance use problems. Currently, CHS offers behavioral health counseling based in over 50 schools across six school districts.
