Spokane Swing Bridge Currently Closed to Motor Vehicles

The Spokane St Swing Bridge (also known as the West Seattle Low Bridge) is currently closed to motor vehicles as Seattle Department of Transportation [ https://sdotblog.seattle.gov/2024/09/15/low-bridge-repair-update/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] (SDOT) crews continue to repair damage from a car crash on the evening of September 14 [ https://spdblotter.seattle.gov/2024/09/17/impaired-driver-arrested-for-crashing-into-barrier-on-spokane-street-bridge-gun-recovered/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ].

Harbor Island can still be accessed from the east (coming from the SODO neighborhood). Cars and trucks can use the West Seattle High-Rise bridge to cross the Duwamish Waterway. These maps show how to go to [ https://sdotblog.seattle.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2024/09/Terminal5_Entering_Map.png?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] and from [ https://sdotblog.seattle.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2024/09/Terminal5_Exit_Map.png?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] Terminal 5.

SDOT engineers and maintenance crews have been making ongoing steady progress on repairs. We expect the repairs to take several days but do not know exactly when the repairs will be completed.

We will continue to post frequent detailed updates on this blog post [ https://sdotblog.seattle.gov/2024/09/15/low-bridge-repair-update/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]. You can read these updates here:

*Why is the bridge closed? * The damage occurred around 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 14 when a vehicle drove through the warning gates and onto the bridge [ https://spdblotter.seattle.gov/2024/09/17/impaired-driver-arrested-for-crashing-into-barrier-on-spokane-street-bridge-gun-recovered/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] while it was swinging open and hit the metal barricade. The barricade prevented the speeding vehicle from driving off the bridge, but the collision severely damaged the mechanical gate, lock mechanism, gate control panel, and sensors that are essential for safe bridge operations.

*When will the bridge reopen?* SDOT engineers and maintenance crews are making ongoing progress on repairs [ https://sdotblog.seattle.gov/2024/09/15/low-bridge-repair-update/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#9.17_update ]. While work is moving forward efficiently, technicians expect it will take at least a few more days to finish repairs.

*What is the detour route?* Harbor Island can still be accessed from the east via S Spokane St coming from the SODO neighborhood. Cars and trucks can use the West Seattle High-Rise bridge to travel across the Duwamish Waterway.

*Will there be Spokane St Viaduct closures this weekend? * If the repairs are not completed before the weekend, crews would continue working on repairs over the weekend and we would reduce the scale of work on the nearby Spokane St Viaduct paving project [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/programs/bridges-stairs-and-other-structures/bridges/spokane-viaduct-rehabilitation?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] to make sure that people have access to get on the West Seattle High-Rise Bridge from SODO.  (The South Spokane Street Viaduct is the elevated roadway that goes through SODO to connect the West Seattle Bridge and I-5. This is a different structure from either the West Seattle Bridge or the Spokane St Swing Bridge.)

*What was damaged?* The impact twisted and bent the main metal tube [ https://sdotblog.seattle.gov/2024/09/15/low-bridge-repair-update/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#9.16_update ] which is the backbone of the mechanical gate. The electronics, motor, and locking pin linear drive motor inside the metal tube were also damaged in the crash. All these components are essential for safe bridge operations.

*Why aren’t there more crew members visibly working on the bridge?* Crew members may not be visible on the bridge all the time because much of the manufacturing and repair work is conducted offsite.

*Why does the whole bridge need to be closed for a damaged gate? * It is not safe for drivers to use the bridge without a safety gate. Additionally, there are electronic sensors inside the mechanical gates which act as safeguards and prevent the bridge from operating without a functional gate.

*Why are bicycles able to use the bridge but not cars or trucks? * The pedestrian and bicycle path gates were not damaged from the crash. It is not safe for drivers to use the bridge without a safety gate.
