Two crewmebers work on the new sidewalk at the northwest corner of 8th Ave N and Westlake Ave.

Dear Community Members,

Construction continues along Westlake Ave as part of the *Route 40 Transit-Plus Multimodal Corridor Project* [ https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fus-west-2.protection.sophos.com%3Fd=govdelivery.com%26h=65ba9cc2f3dc4f0f8fc82a85a6bf3865%26i=NjVlMjQ4NzM0ODMzNjA1ZjY4NzdkMzc3%26p=m%26s=AVNPUEhUT0NFTkNSWVBUSVa6VABJJSW-Nx63Jpz4i9T9RDnSkFAdZa9EH8toe6YlnzG0LMThLcQjTo2lAm1nVXZGBj1Hkqpxp2XYyl3_kwN8Q7Y4ijiyXlODDAxLcCy0Ns-ses8r9YcIYl6LrUO1tt8%26t=UGZmT3lkYlFhWU02ckFOaVlqYlhrd0tKWjl4UVZxT1hkUnh6ZHp4ZStXbz0%253D%26u=aHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rcy0xLmdvdmRlbGl2ZXJ5LmNvbS9DTDAvaHR0cHM6JTJGJTJGd3d3LnNlYXR0bGUuZ292JTJGdHJhbnNwb3J0YXRpb24lMkZwcm9qZWN0cy1hbmQtcHJvZ3JhbXMlMkZwcm9ncmFtcyUyRnRyYW5zaXQtcHJvZ3JhbSUyRnRyYW5zaXQtcGx1cy1tdWx0aW1vZGFsLWNvcnJpZG9yLXByb2dyYW0lMkZyb3V0ZS00MC0tLXRyYW5zaXQtcGx1cyUzRnV0bV9tZWRpdW09ZW1haWwlMjZ1dG1fc291cmNlPWdvdmRlbGl2ZXJ5LzEvMDEwMDAxOTQ3NTc4N2Q3ZS0zODE4ZWNlMy1jNjk4LTRlZTktYjM2MC1hMTY0M2NjMjdmNjEtMDAwMDAwL2JSUmp0cm1mNEpvY2dGQlgyTUk4NDdTU0JwMHEzQVE4MGpaVThERm0wTjg9Mzg4%26utm_medium=email%26utm_source=govdelivery/1/010001949af71347-01c89677-0788-43ac-8cdc-e63672e3b7fb-000000/nrtHCJunUt2-l2Ieuc1xRf2m1p8MdElwVYZmZRx5p1Y=389 ]. These upgrades will improve transit reliability, pedestrian access, and street safety.

*What's Happening in Westlake?*

*Halladay St and Westlake Ave* This weekend, crews will be installing a temporary lighting circuit along Halladay St to maintain visibility and safety in the area while they work on the underground conduits. This work will allow backfilling and restoration of the sidewalks on the west side of Halladay St, ensuring that our construction efforts are not only efficient but also focused on maintaining accessibility for pedestrians.

*Sidewalk Upgrades Near 8th Ave N and N Galer St* Demolition and upgrades to the sidewalks at the intersection and extending north and south of 8th Ave N and N Galer St on the west side of Westlake Ave will continue through March and into early April.

Please expect detours for pedestrians and wheelchair users, along with temporary lane restrictions. These lane restrictions for traffic will occur intermittently and are expected to last through early May.

*Aloha St and 9th Ave* Crews are expected to start work at this location in late March or early April. Crews will perform trenching work for fiber optic conduits from the intersection that extend north along the west side of the parking lot adjacent to Westlake Ave.

*8th Ave N and Ward Street *Crews will be conducting trenching work to install fiber optic conduits for traffic signals, followed by the restoration of roadway and sidewalk. This work is scheduled to begin as early as April 3.

During this time, temporary lane restrictions may be implemented to facilitate construction activities, and pedestrians should expect detours to ensure safe passage.

*What's Happening in Ballard?*

Crews will begin working on the new concrete median islands on NW Ione Pl, NW Dock Pl, and 20th Ave NW. Work is expected to continue into April.

*What's Happening in Fremont?*

*As part of this project, improvements in the Fremont neighborhood are scheduled to begin in Spring 2025*. We look forward to continuing to work together to keep the community informed and ensure a smooth process for everyone who relies on Route 40.

Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to construction!

Route 40 Ridership is on the Rise

Route 40 has over *8,500 average weekday daily boardings [ https://app.powerbigov.us/view?r=eyJrIjoiZDMwMWExOTMtOTY3ZC00MTU5LTgxMDgtODM4MTZiYTExMzJkIiwidCI6ImJhZTUwNTlhLTc2ZjAtNDlkNy05OTk2LTcyZGZlOTVkNjljNyJ9&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] *(Fall 2024) - an 11% increase from Fall 2023. It is the fifth (5th) highest ridership route in the Metro network.

Project Benefits

In addition to the 5-10% transit travel time savings, 14-17% in Ballard to Downtown, the Route 40 project will maintain and modernize vital infrastructure

What you can expect during construction

* Temporary lane reductions
* Temporary driveway closures
* Temporary bus stop closures
* Temporary parking restrictions
* Temporary sidewalk detours
* Temporary storage of construction supplies in the street
* Temporary noise, dust and vibrations
* Bus stop relocations
* Drainage work: This involves digging trenches to help manage water flow
* Signal pole foundation excavation: This work involves digging for the pole foundations prior to when we order custom signal poles which takes a while to build and to make sure we know there are no underground obstructions
* Trenching for conduit: This involves digging trenches to lay down pipes or cables underground
* Sidewalk curb bulb out: This involves making the curbs stick outward for safety or accessibility
* Mill and fill overlay: This is when the top layer of the road gets removed and replaced with new asphalt

The construction timeline is always subject to change depending on weather conditions and materials availability. We are committed to keeping you informed and maintaining open communication throughout the remainder of this project.To learn more about the project and designs, visit our online open house.  [ https://route40.infocommunity.org/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]
