Construction update

Our crews recently completed the majority of our work on 15th Ave S including installing protected bike lanes and repairing sections of sidewalk from S Charles St to S Bayview St. 15th Ave S is now reopened to traffic in both directions, but* the bike lanes remain closed until we complete drainage work and clear the lanes of debris*. Crews will return to 15th Ave S this spring to complete roadway striping, plantings, and final drainage work.

Over the next few weeks, you'll see our crews doing the following work throughout the project area:

* Removing roadway pavement and sidewalk and installing storm drain improvements on the east side and center lane of Beacon Ave S near the intersection of S Lander St
* Removing roadway pavement and sidewalk and installing storm drain improvements on the east side of Beacon Ave S near the intersection of S Hanford St
* Continuing electrical improvements and then restoring roadway, sidewalks, and curb ramps on the west side of Beacon Ave S near the intersection of S Hanford St
* Removing 3 trees near the intersection of Beacon Ave S and S Lander St outside of the Hilltop Red Apple as early as February 1. We will plant 9 new trees in the area to replace these trees this spring.
* Evaluating trees on Beacon Ave S south of S McClellan St. We will work with an arborist to evaluate all options for retaining these trees before considering removal. We hope none of these trees will need to be removed, but sometimes removal is the only option to construct ADA-compliant sidewalks. For any tree that must be removed, we will replant 3 more nearby that are sidewalk-friendly and better suited for the environment.

*Please note that some of this work is weather dependent and subject to schedule changes.

Tree Removal Update

January 31 update: Thank you to each person who reached out to us this week advocating for the trees along Beacon Ave S south of S McClellan St under evaluation. We understand that it can be alarming to see so many trees posted for evaluation, but we assure you that we are working with an arborist to explore every other option before we consider removals. It is possible that these evaluations will result in no tree removals.

These tree evaluations will be taking place over the next few weeks. After the evaluations, we will offer a public site walk with our arborist to explain the results to those in attendance. Please subscribe to our email list or keep an eye out for updates on our project webpage to hear about when this public site walk will take place.

January 10 update: We are beginning to inspect tree roots along the project corridor on Beacon Ave S south of S Lander St to evaluate the tree root systems and health to determine need for removal to make sidewalks ADA-compliant. If any trees need to be removed, our arborist will post the trees for 2 weeks before our crews remove them and repair nearby sidewalks and curb ramps.

We may need to remove more trees than the three we initially identified during design phase. As we began sidewalk repair work on the project corridor, we're finding that more trees have root systems that are too shallow and overgrown under the sidewalk. If we exhaust all other design options to build ADA-compliant sidewalks, we will need to post and remove trees. We are trying our best to retain as many trees as possible. We will continue to inspect tree roots as we move southward with our sidewalk repair work and will share additional information about tree removals as they become available.
