Kenmore City Council adopts first Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Strategic Plan

*KENMORE, Wash.* – Last night, City Council adopted the City of Kenmore’s first ever Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Strategic Plan [ https://kenmore.civicweb.net/FileStorage/C9F5B2DC59B84552881D2E318124C3EB-MK%20City%20of%20Kenmore%20DEIA%20Strategic%20Plan%2008.31.23.cl.pdf ] following on the DEIA Policy [ https://www.kenmorewa.gov/home/showpublisheddocument/2257/637940787738630000 ] adopted in November 2022. Mayor Nigel Herbig said, “The City Council’s adoption of this Strategic Plan demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility as we build a community where all people love where they live.”

The Strategic Plan contains seven goals designed to create and foster community and workplace culture that consistently places DEIA principles at the heart of everything the City does. The goals, each of which has several actionable objectives to help realize that goal, focus on seven major areas: Leadership and Operations; Plans, Policies, and Budgets; Workplace; Communication & Education; Facility Plans & Improvements; Public Safety & Justice Services; and Housing & Human Services.

Councilmember Corina Pfeil said of the adoption, “I am very passionate about DEIA so it is very fulfilling to me personally to see this plan come forward so we can take real, on-the-ground action to ensure that Kenmore is a place where each person feels welcome and valued.”

The Plan’s adoption comes after over a year of outreach to the public and work by the City Council, city staff, and the DEIA Advisory Committee (erstwhile Task Force). The DEIA Advisory Committee in particular played a key role in refining and improving both the Policy and the Plan through the feedback they were able to give due to their expertise and lived experience. Special thanks are due to the community members who compose this body and have volunteered their time and diligence: Darleen Ademba, Juanita Aguilar, David Arthur, Marco Ballesteros, Lily Bishop, Bill Castro, Erika Del Villar, Peggy Evans, Jeanne Galloway, Carlos Gil, Aisha Jallow, Alinafe Matenda, Leslie Mcguire, Sam Otis, Juliana Pooley, Nancy Thai, and Parker Travis.

“It’s a real honor to see the Committee’s hard work come to fruition. The City Council’s adoption of the Strategic Plan is just one more step in this journey and the rubber is about to really hit the road when city staff begins implementing this new plan and incorporating it into their daily work,” said DEIA Advisory Committee member Alinafe Matenda.

The plan calls for the city manager to report annually to the City Council on the plan’s progress. The report will be due in July of each year.
