This year we saw big milestones for the East Marginal Way Corridor Improvement Project [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/programs/freight-program/east-marginal-way-corridor-improvement-project?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]! We broke ground on the North Segment, completed major drainage and water main work in partnership with Seattle Public Utilities, and kicked off outreach for the project’s public art. Thank you to all of our project partners, the community, and our construction team for making this a successful start to construction.

Read below to learn about our progress this year and find out what we have planned for 2025.

Start of North Segment Construction
EMW Groundbreaking

Mayor Bruce Harrell and SDOT Director Greg Spotts break ground with project partners

Mayor Bruce Harrell and SDOT director Greg Spotts joined representatives from the Federal Highway Administration, the Port of Seattle, SODO BIA, Cascade Bicycle Club, and West Seattle Bike Connections to officially break ground on North Segment construction on April 2, 2024! The North Segment, from S Atlantic St to S Spokane St, is a critical route for our maritime and manufacturing industry and a major connection for people walking and biking between Downtown, West Seattle, and south Seattle neighborhoods. Our project improvements make it safer and easier to get through the area regardless of how you travel. For freight vehicles, there is weigh-in-motion so trucks don’t have to stop at weigh stations, new/upgraded signals that adapt to traffic volumes, and a new dynamic messaging sign to let them know what to expect as they enter the corridor. For people walking and biking, new protected bike lanes, upgraded signals, and repaired sidewalks create a safer, more enjoyable experience.

Please note that E Marginal Way S remains closed to general purpose traffic between S Spokane St and S Atlantic St so we can complete construction as quickly and safely as possible.

Major Drainage and Water Main Work Complete!

Crews install new watermain pipes

Thanks to partnership with Seattle Public Utilities, we were able to upgrade the watermain that extends from S Horton St to just south of S Massachusetts St. Combined with our street improvements, these investments in critical infrastructure will serve our busy maritime and manufacturing industries for years to come. The remaining construction will be focused on street paving, bike lane and sidewalk installation, landscaping, and signal and lighting upgrades.

Public Art Outreach

In partnership with the Office of Arts & Culture, we commissioned artist Will Schlough [ https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.willschlough.com%2F%3Futm_medium=email%26utm_source=govdelivery/1/01000192b65ff231-6c499c4d-8672-46f4-bc92-9eb0cb859abf-000000/A9fk8fYEfgojhElbpLMQzOoEtCw1MX_mAlSPg-ngGKI=376 ] to create public art along the project corridor. This year, Schlough has worked to connect with people who bike, walk, roll, and drive along E Marginal Way S to shape his art. In October, he hosted a tabling event along the corridor to gather community input. If you missed this event, there are still ways for you to get involved:

* Send an email to EastMarginal@Seattle.gov letting us know what you want to see in the public artwork

What to Expect in 2025

North Segment construction is expected to last until spring 2026. We expect E Marginal Way S to remain closed to general purpose traffic for the duration of construction. People walking and biking may continue to use E Marginal Way S with designated routes that avoid active construction. We’ll share regular updates on project progress, route changes, and public engagement opportunities throughout 2025.
