The RapidRide J Line project will improve the University District, Eastlake, South Lake Union, and Belltown. Whether you are commuting to work, attending classes at the University of Washington, receiving medical care, or visiting a local business, this project will enhance access to transit and provide a smoother, more convenient travel experience, making it easier to get around these parts of the city.

Our focus is on modernizing and maintaining reliable transit connections for Seattle’s growing communities. We will improve roads, sidewalks, curb ramps, lighting, drainage, and traffic signals. Additionally, we will install protected bike lanes and replace the water main on Eastlake Ave E. These enhancements are essential for supporting local businesses, improving access to housing, and fostering vibrant, connected communities.

Here's what is included in this email update:

* University District Water Shutoffs
* NE 43rd St Closure in University District
* Stormwater Work on Eastlake Ave E
* Drainage Work on Fairview Ave N
* Construction and Online Drop-In Sessions

University District Water Shutoffs

As part of our water main work, we will be shutting off water twice on the following days and times:

* Sunday, January 26 from 2:30 – 4:30 P.M.
* Sunday, February 2 from 2:00 – 7:00 P.M.

The first of the water supply shut offs will be to test the existing valve ahead of the February 2 closure. By testing in advance, we can reduce the impacts and extent of future water interruptions. The map below indicates which properties will experience the water shutoffs during the dates and times listed above. We appreciate your patience and understanding during these shutoffs.

You can read more about water main shut offs in our frequently asked questions [ https://www.seattle.gov/documents/Departments/SDOT/TransitProgram/RapidRide/Roosevelt/Water%20Main%20FAQs.pdf?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] document on the project website.

NE 43rd St Closure in University District

Starting in late January, we will be closing NE 43rd St between Roosevelt Way NE and 11th Ave NE, followed by a closure between 11th Ave NE and 12th Ave NE. A detour will be put in place guiding traffic around the closures. During these closure, northbound traffic on 11th Ave NE will be maintained.

This work will include trenching in the roadway, the installation of a new water main, and finally new concrete paving. Be prepared for noise, vibrations, dust, and trucking activities for up to eight weeks at this location. We are working with local business owners to maintain access, garbage pickup, and deliveries.

Stormwater Work on Eastlake Ave E

Stormwater drainage replacement work is progressing north along Eastlake Ave E from E Howe St to E Newton Street. This work will require us to close E Newton St at the intersection on the west side of Eastlake Ave E. Local access will be permitted from Yale Ave E. Vehicles will also be prevented from turning northbound from Yale Ave E onto Eastlake Ave E during the short duration of this portion of our work.

Further to the north, crews are working on drainage lines on Eastlake between E Hamlin St and E Allison St. This work requires us to dig trenches, install new drainage pipes, and connect inlets where needed. Nearby businesses and residences will notice additional noise and vibration.

We recently finished putting down temporary pavement between E Blaine St and E Howe St. This temporary pavement will allow crews to shift traffic around upcoming work in the center of the road.

On Eastlake Ave E and E Galer St, we will install inlets. Please anticipate detours while walking, riding bikes, or using scooters. Additionally, there may be some noise and vibrations during this period. Once the work is complete, all detours will be removed, and any closed lanes will be patched up and reopened.

After the completion of the stormwater work on along Eastlake Ave E from E Howe St and E Newton St, we will progress north to E Boston St. We will ultimately conclude our mainline stormwater work at Eastlake Ave E and E Lynn St. Our focus will then shift towards the installation of inlets and connections to the mainline.

Stormwater Work on Fairview Ave N

We have begun drainage work on Fairview Ave N between Yale Ave N and Aloha St. Please be aware of the closure of the bike ramp on the southern end of the Fairview Ave N Bridge. During this closure a temporary ramp will be put in place 20 feet north. After completion of the work, we will restore the area to its original condition. Please also anticipate lane closures. We will maintain one lane of traffic in each direction during this work.
