Changes to Kenmore’s Business Registration Program

The City of Kenmore made changes to its Business Registration [ https://www.kenmorewa.gov/business/business-registration-licensing ] program at the July 24, 2023 City Council meeting by adoption of Ordinance No. 23-0583. These changes become effective on January 1, 2024.  

*All Kenmore Businesses Now Required to Register with the City and New Fee Threshold Change *  


* In 2023, the annual fee for a Kenmore business registration is $10 for businesses that earn over $2,000 in annual gross income. There is no registration fee for businesses earning $2,000 or less.  
* As of January 1, 2024, the gross annual income threshold will change to $12,000, increasing the number of businesses that are eligible for the no-fee registration.
* Starting in 2024, if your Kenmore business, including home-based businesses, is eligible for a no-fee registration, it will be noted on your business license renewal notice from the Department of Revenue Business Licensing Service (DOR-BLS). The City's business license application process is managed by DOR-BLS. 
* Kenmore nonprofit organizations will continue to qualify for a no-fee Kenmore registration regardless of gross annual income. This applies to nonprofits certified as a 501c3 or 501c4. 

*Non-Kenmore Businesses Required to Register* 

The City of Kenmore currently does not require "non-resident" businesses to register with the City. Non-resident businesses are those that are physically located outside city limits. 

*Beginning in 2024, non-resident businesses that conduct business within city of Kenmore limits will be required to obtain a Kenmore business license by registering through** the DOR-BLS.* The fee structure is the same as the resident business registration and the license fee is determined by gross annual income earned or anticipated to be earned within Kenmore city limits. 

See table below for 2024 fees. This does not affect the processing fee charged by the Department of Revenue.

Annual Gross Income = < $12,000 Business Registration Fee is $0 
Annual Gross Income > $12,000 Business Registration Fee is $10

Openings Available For Free Business Training for Local Businesses

*"The City of Kenmore is betting on local businesses! "* 

Thanks to a grant from the Port of Seattle, the City of Kenmore is providing monthly business training classes to local business owners. The Business Acceleration Program (BAP) [ https://www.kenmorewa.gov/businesstraining ] is a monthly course that focuses on accelerated marketing, staffing, finance, and what your business would look like at 5X your current revenue. 

*These monthly sessions are being offered at no cost to the businesses and include individual business consulting.* This is an opportunity to be inspired by experts and other business owners. 

Businesses must submit an online application to be enrolled and can attend as many sessions as they like. No drop-ins will be accepted. 

Since its debut in 2016, the BAP has served 94 businesses of various sizes and business sectors, and the City of Kenmore is excited to provide this opportunity once again.

Join the Kenmore Business Alliance

The Kenmore Business Alliance [ https://bothellkenmorechamber.org/our-chamber/committees/kenmore-business-alliance/ ] (KBA) is a sub-committee of the Bothell Kenmore Chamber, made up of both local businesses and community organizations. If you are interested in keeping up on business happenings in Kenmore, connecting with City staff, and networking with your fellow local business owners and managers, then you are invited to attend and upcoming KBA meeting, held on the first Thursday of most months from 8:30 am to 10 am at Kenmore City Hall. The KBA is free to participate in and you do not have to be a Chamber member to attend. We hope to see you at the next meeting on Thursday, October 5!
