Edwin Fountain, the Wood Sculptor of Mount Baker, Carves New Life Into Fallen Branches and Tree Stumps
On any random day at Colman Park beach or maybe somewhere along the shores of Lake Washington, you might find Edwin Fountain patiently carving life into a weathered stump or forgotten tree branch. The Alabama-born artist, now a well-known and loved fixture in Seattle's parks, approaches woodcarving with the quiet intensity of someone who understands that wood speaks its own language. Despite limited recognition from traditional art institutions, Fountain stays true to his path. "I never tried to get it recognized," he says with quiet determination. "It was a gift that I have and something that I enjoy." His artistic philosophy is refreshingly straightforward: "I try to create something that everybody's gonna like."

One of America's Largest Public Food Forests Grows in Seattle
Tucked into the western edge of Jefferson Park Beacon Food Forest feels like a secret garden — if that garden were seven acres of public land where anyone, at any time, can harvest fresh produce, pick medicinal herbs, or join a work party with their neighbors. A food forest is a place meant to mimic the layers and systems of a natural forest. One of the largest public food forests in the United States, Beacon Food Forest just may be the most hopeful piece of land in Seattle. Founded in 2009 by a group of University of Washington permaculture students with a big idea, the food forest has become a national model for what community-led urban agriculture can look like.
