Believe it or not, but Fall weather is upon us in the Pacific Northwest! With the shorter days and rainy weather comes an increase in weather events that can affect our daily routines and overall safety.
We encourage everyone to take an inventory of your inclement weather preparedness supplies that have been sitting throughout the summer. Here are some helpful tips to ensure you are fully prepared for what Fall in western Washington may bring our way:
* Check your emergency supplies. If you don't have an emergency kit, build one. Check out Ready.gov [ https://www.ready.gov/ ]'s recommendations for building a kit [ https://www.ready.gov/kit ]. Replace any items that are expired or have been used.
* Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors for proper function. It is recommended to replace the batteries during each time change for Daylight Savings (March and November).
* Check the seals on doors and windows. Repair or replace weather stripping to prevent drafts and save energy.
* Have fireplaces and chimneys inspected. If needed, have your chimney swept to prevent potential fire hazards.
* Clean your gutters. Leaves and debris build up can damage roofs and homes.
* Inspect your roof for loose shingles and damage.
* Practice ladder safety and proper usage.
* Be careful when doing yardwork. Use rakes that are the right length and wear eye and hearing protection. It's easy to over-exert when temperatures are moderate.
* Be sure to keep your cell phones and other important electronic devices fully charged as much as possible in the event the power goes out. Remember, you can charge your devices from your car if your device's battery runs dangerously low and the power is out. However, never leave your vehicle running in your garage, unattended, or without sufficient gas or battery life in your vehicle.
As Fall winds start to pick up, downed trees and power lines pose a serious safety concern. To report hazardous roads, call 911 to notify a Medina Police Officer. To report power outages or downed power lines, call Puget Sound Energy at 1-888-225-5773. You can also download the myPSE app [ https://www.pse.com/en/pages/get-the-pse-app ] or check the online outage map [ https://www.pse.com/outage/outage-map ] located on their website [ https://www.pse.com/ ].
_*Safety reminders:*_
* Never touch or go within 35 feet of downed power lines because they might be energized.
* Do not use a charcoal or gas grill to cook indoors. Never use a natural gas range for heating, or charcoal as an indoor heating source. This can cause a buildup of poisonous carbon monoxide gas.
* If you choose to use a portable home generator, read the manufacturer’s instructions for the safe operation of the generator. Do not operate generators indoors or in enclosed spaces to avoid the build up of carbon monoxide.
* If you’re using portable heaters, keep them away from furniture, draperies and other flammable materials.
* Always use flashlights instead of candles.
Additional safety publications from the Medina Police Department will be posted periodically, including snow/ice preparations, hazardous road conditions, and crime prevention tips. Resources are always available on the Medina Police Emergency Preparedness webpage [ https://www.medina-wa.gov/eps ].
Remember to check in with your neighbors, family and friends to make sure everyone is safe and healthy!
