*Stay Informed: **Dr. José Rizal Bridge Repainting Project*
*Ongoing work on S Dearborn St including sidewalk and bike lane temporary closures*
Crews use a lift from S Dearborn St to install scaffolding under the Dr. José Rizal Bridge, temporarily impacting lanes and the north sidewalk.
View from above showing crews use a lift to install scaffolding under the Dr. José Rizal Bridge as part of ongoing repainting work. This work requires access from S Dearborn St, temporarily impacting the north sidewalk, and the westbound bike and travel lanes.
*We’re repainting the historic **Dr. José Rizal Bridge* [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/programs/bridges-stairs-and-other-structures/bridges/dr-jose-rizal-bridge-repainting-project?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]*, a steel bridge built in 1911, to ensure it remains functional and safe for future generations. *

*What’s happening now (week of April 28)*
Over the past week, our contractor has been assembling scaffolding on the bridge, which required heavy equipment and temporary use of portions of the west and eastbound bike and travel lanes, and the north side sidewalk.
We understand how important this connection is for people traveling between Rainier Valley, Beacon Hill, and downtown Seattle, and we truly appreciate you sharing your concerns, especially from the perspective of those who bike this route.
We’re taking steps to ensure biking remains as safe as possible during this phase of the project, which is likely to wrap up within a week:
* Water-filled barricades have been installed to protect the bike lanes where concrete barriers were removed.
* Whenever work is occurring in the bike lanes, flaggers will be present to control traffic and keep everyone safe by directing bikes and cars to travel through the work zone at different times.
* Work in the bike lanes is now limited to nighttime hours (9 PM – 7 AM) to avoid peak commute times.
* Scaffolding work will wrap up soon, reducing the frequency of bike lanes disruptions.
Crews use the eastbound bike lane on S Dearborn St to place equipment that lifts workers to the Dr. José Rizal Bridge for scaffolding work.
Crews using the eastbound bike lane along S Dearborn St to position equipment that lifts workers to the height of the Dr. José Rizal Bridge for scaffolding installation.
*What’s Next (*through 2026)**
Once the scaffolding is complete, most work will take place on the bridge itself, minimizing impacts on the S Dearborn St bike lanes. Here’s what you can expect moving forward:
* No additional daytime work is currently planned in the westbound bike lane.
* The eastbound bike lane may occasionally be blocked for short periods when crews deliver materials or load removed paint from the bridge into transport vehicles for environmentally safe disposal.
* All work that affects the bike lanes will continue to take place outside peak commute hours, with flaggers onsite to manage traffic safely.
* Water-filled barricades will remain in place throughout the project. Concrete barriers will be reinstalled in phases, with the full barrier system restored when the project is completed in 2026.

*Keeping You Updated *
We’re committed to keeping you informed as the project progresses. Your feedback helps us do better, and we welcome the opportunity to keep improving.
Thank you for your understanding as we work to preserve this historic landmark.
Best,
Trilce Villalobos, outreach lead
