TODAY: City and Health Leaders Give Progress Update on Seattle Fire Department’s Innovative Buprenorphine Pilot Program

*Seattle *– Today, Mayor Bruce Harrell will join leaders from the Seattle Fire Department (SFD), Washington State Department of Health, and emergency medical responders to give a progress update on SFD’s Buprenorphine Pilot Program. 

The pilot program launched this spring [ https://harrell.seattle.gov/2024/03/12/seattle-fire-department-launches-pilot-program-allowing-paramedics-to-administer-buprenorphine-in-the-field/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] with paramedics allowed to administer buprenorphine, a medication to treat opioid use disorder and reduce the risk of future overdoses, in the field for patients being treated for an opioid overdose or those actively experiencing withdrawal symptoms.  

Following authorization from the state, Seattle became the first city in the country [ https://harrell.seattle.gov/2024/10/09/city-of-seattle-to-become-first-in-nation-with-fire-department-emts-administering-buprenorphine-medication-in-the-field/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] to allow firefighter/emergency medical technicians (EMTs) to administer the medicine this fall, expanding access to this lifesaving treatment option.
