A chill is in the air!
Be prepared for the cold weather:
* Let cold water trickle at night from the faucet farthest from the hot water tank.
* Open cabinet doors to allow more heat to get to uninsulated pipes under sinks.
* Make sure heat is left on and set no lower than 55 degrees.
* If you plan to be away, have someone check the house daily to make sure the heat is still on.
Please check on your neighbors that may need extra assistance as the cold weather comes our way. It is especially important to protect yourself as well as others while out in the neighborhood driving, running or walking. Please make yourself and any drivers in your household aware of these safety tips:
* If your vehicle has been sitting out overnight during cold temperatures, make sure to scrape your windshield and defrost your rear and side windows before getting on the road. It is crucial while driving to always have a clear line of sight to everything in front of you.
* During times of heavy rain, snow and ice, allow extra time to get to your destination.
* Drive for the conditions, keeping slower speeds in mind.
* Do not leave your vehicle running in your driveway to warm it up and defrost the windows. That is an excellent opportunity for thieves to steal your vehicle!
* Always use your headlights when it is raining, snowing and on icy roads.
* Do not tailgate – make sure to leave extra room between your car and the vehicle in front of you, especially when the roads are slick.
* Slow down and use EXTRA caution when approaching intersections, crosswalks, off ramps or bridges. Look out for slippery conditions as well as pedestrians!!
* Most importantly, do not use your cell phone or text while driving! This is especially crucial during inclement weather conditions. Please be aware of other vehicles and pedestrians around you at all times.
Additional safety publications from the Medina Police Department will be posted periodically, including snow/ice preparations, hazardous road conditions, and crime prevention tips.
