Update on N 130th St Vision Zero Safety Street Redesign

Seattle Department of Transportation logo

Hi Neighbors,

We’re getting ready to redesign N 130th St from Stone Ave N to 1st Ave NE for safer travel, better connections to Sound Transit’s future Pinehurst Light Rail Station [ https://www.soundtransit.org/system-expansion/pinehurst-station?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ], and to support new all-day bus service for King County Metro's Route 77 [ https://kingcounty.gov/en/legacy/depts/transportation/metro/programs-projects/fares-routes-and-service/lynnwood-link-connections.aspx?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] arriving next year.

Starting as soon as late April, we will reconfigure the street from its current 4 lanes (2 lanes in each direction) to 3 lanes with 1 vehicle lane in each direction, a center turn lane, and new protected bike lanes that people on scooters can use too. As we get closer to starting work, we’ll share the schedule and expected construction activities.

This work is part of our Vision Zero [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/safety-first/vision-zero?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] commitment to ending traffic deaths and serious crashes so everyone safely arrives at their destinations. You can learn more about the project below and on our website [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/safety-first/vision-zero/projects/n-130th-st-vision-zero-safety-corridor-?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ].

*Why are you redesigning N 130th St?*

N 130th St between Aurora Ave N and I-5 is a high collision area with a history of serious injuries for people walking and biking. The new street design reduces conflicts between people driving and people walking, biking, and scooting, and makes it easier for people driving to safely make left turns using the center turn lane.

We completed a similar redesign of NE 125th St [ https://www.seattle.gov/documents/Departments/SDOT/About/DocumentLibrary/Reports/130415NE125thStRechannelReportFINAL.pdf?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] from 4 lanes to 3 (1 vehicle lane in each direction and a center turn lane). After the street was redesigned, there was:

* A 10% reduction in overall collisions and a 17% reduction in injury collisions
* An 8% reduction in the 85th percentile speed (speed that most drivers are comfortable driving), an 11% reduction in speeds above 30 MPH, a 44% reduction in speeds above 35 MPH, and a 69% reduction in speeds above 40
* An 114% increase in people biking and a 105% increase in people walking using crosswalks

*What to expect during construction*

As we get closer to construction, we will share the expected working hours and construction activities. In general, you can expect the following:

* We will work over approximately 1-2 weekends in late April/early May during the daytime. Work may be rescheduled because of weather.
* You can expect 1 vehicle lane in each direction to remain open with temporary lane shifts/closures and traffic control
* You will still have access to your driveway along N 130th St but there may be brief closures for up to 20 minutes while the lane markings dry

*How is this project different than the N 130th St – Bitter Lake to Haller Lake Mobility Improvements project?*

The N 130th St Vision Zero Safety Corridor project addresses immediate pavement quality issues and safety needs on N 130th St from Stone Ave N to 1st Ave NE. The [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/programs/transportation-planning/n-130th-st-%E2%80%93-bitter-lake-to-haller-lake-mobility-improvements?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] It also builds on the safety improvements from the N 130th St Vision Zero Safety Corridor [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/safety-first/vision-zero/projects/n-130th-st-vision-zero-safety-corridor-?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] project with curb-separated bike lanes, additional crossing and signal improvements, and bus reliability features.
