Immigration is Our Strength, in Seattle and Beyond
"Some in power would have us believe that immigrants weaken America. But as someone whose life was made possible by immigration, I know the opposite is true. Immigration keeps this country alive, vibrant and strong." Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Director, Jenifer Chao shares her story in the Seattle Times as an immigrant whose parents followed their hopes and dreams for their children and how that experience inspired her work in public service up to now as the Director of DON.

A Fistful of Loud: Seattle Neighbors Build Whistle Kits to Protect Immigrants
Whistles have become a simple, cheap, and instant way to signal when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are nearby and warn people vulnerable to being detained. Whistles are threaded with yarn at a table so they can be worn around the neck. Others pack small bags with directions on how to use them if they see ICE agents in their area. Neighbors put these kits together every week to be distributed across the community to protect people from unlawful detainment. If whistles are heard, organizers urge people to follow the noise, form a nonviolent but loud whistling crowd, record any ICE agent activity, and text those details to the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network's (WAISN) deportation defense hotline.
