State of the City

SOTC

Happy Friday, Kent!

Last night was the 2024 State of the City Address! We had an amazing turnout, and it was great to see plenty of familiar faces.

Throughout the evening, I provided some updates about what the city accomplished last year, what we are currently working on and what's on the horizon.

You can check out the livestream recording of the speech on the city's Facebook page. Hope you enjoy and have a great weekend!

Dana Ralph, Kent Mayor

On Wednesday, I stopped by the Student Career and College Exploration Fair at Canyon Ridge Middle School.

It was fun to field questions about what I do, and how can someone work for the city!

Thank you to our HR department, Kent PD and Puget Sound Fire for coming to represent!

It was great to meet the crew and have the opportunity to personally invite Spanish-speaking residents to this great event.

Go Horizon Hawks! I can't think of a better way to spend some time on a sunny Tuesday afternoon than reading to 4th graders at Horizon Elementary.

The Unstoppable Garrett Morgan tells a great story about an inventor and hero. His motto was "If a man puts something to block your way, the first time you go around it, the second time you go over it, and the third time you go through it." Wise advice!

Remember when I told you about Alex last year, and how he was going to do BIG things?

Tuesday, at our city council meeting, we honored his sister Starla with a proclamation for "Starla Jane Hindberg-O'Keeffe Day". Alex and Clara are honoring their sister by sharing her FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) story with all who will listen.

They are amazing kids, doing even more amazing work.* Read more about Alex and Clara's cause in our "People of Kent" series.* [ https://www.kentwa.gov/government/race-equity/people-of-kent?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]

Kent Commons Remodel

________________________________________________________________________

Commons

Like I mentioned at the State of the City, we are excited to announce the Kent Commons Community Center is getting a refresh!

The Kent Commons building was originally constructed in 1979 and is due for upgrades and improvements to allow us to continue providing the quality programs and experiences you know and love, while still preserving this City facility.

The project kicked off this week and will be wrapped later this year. Throughout the duration of the project, the building will be open and operating normal hours, but several amenities will be closed during the entirety of construction.

These amenities include racquetball courts, weight room, locker room, main restrooms, and the main entrance/front counter. All building visitors will be asked to enter through the temporary entrance and check in at the temporarily relocated front counter.

Signage and building detours will be in place for all program participants, rental groups, and visitors. Stay tuned for updates throughout the project!

Questions? Please call the Kent Commons at 253-856-5100.

Annual Diaper Drive

________________________________________________________________________

diaper drive

Help us collect diapers and wipes for the 10th Annual March for Diapers Drive. During March, donate diapers and wipes at Kent City Hall during business hours.

Every year, the City of Kent joins other South King County cities in collecting diapers and wipes for babies in need.

We have set up a Diaper Corral in City Hall Lobby to collect donations until March 29. We are asking for any child diapers preemie to size 6, as well as pullups and baby wipes. We will take half used packages too!

Two outstanding organizations that serve Kent that will receive donations from this drive are: Domestic Abuse Women's Network (DAWN) & Kent's Pediatric Interim Care Center (PICC).
