Mayor's Update

July 28, 2023

NNO

Happy Friday Kent!

I'm so excited about National Night Out on Tuesday! This annual, national event is all about community and connecting with your local police officers and residents.

There’s a good chance your neighborhood or one nearby is hosting a potluck, barbecue, ice cream social, or some kind of gathering.

So, talk to your neighbors, and come on out to meet our staff, officers, firefighters and your elected representatives!

This is a great opportunity to connect with us over good food, music and family fun. I hope you enjoy this week's update and have a fantastic weekend.

Dana Ralph, Kent Mayor

good eggs

Last week I joined local elected officials and community leaders (like Auburn Mayor Backus!) from South King County at King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer's "Good Eggs" breakfast.

We heard from special Guest King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion and followed up with a great roundtable discussion.

Over the weekend, I attended the Flav-R-Pac NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways Park. Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus was also there to congratulate the winners!

Lung cancer is the deadliest cancer in the United States. Early detection through *lung cancer screening [ https://www.alcsi.org/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]* can find lung cancers at early stages, when they are easier to treat and cure. The screening is painless, fast and is covered by most insurance.

If you are between 50 and 80 years old and have a smoking history, you may be eligible for lung cancer screening. It's important to raise awareness and get screened as early as you can. Talk to your doctor about lung cancer screening.

The city, in partnership with the *National Development Council [ https://ndconline.org/about-us/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]*, has launched a Commercial Affordability grant program. Funding will cover *pre-development costs* for real estate projects that will support ownership or long-term lease *opportunities for small businesses*.

The program will focus on *catalytic projects*, such as mixed income or affordable housing projects in the city’s commuter rail transit areas and redevelopment of vacant or abandoned sites in high density, high need locations. Potential recipients are Kent small businesses or nonprofits, especially those operating in the key service delivery areas of early education, childcare, or food security.

As we wrap up National Parks & Recreation Month, it's important to recognize the professionals in this field for their service.

Our Parks team celebrated with the community at weekly pop-up events throughout our park system. I had so much fun watching the Parks & Recreation tree “grow” with the hands of event attendees throughout the month.
