DEVELOPMENT SERVICES UPDATE
May 2024
Building Safety Month
In May of each year, the International Code Council (ICC) leads a campaign to recognize the important work of building safety professionals and highlight the significance of modern building codes that are updated regularly. Building codes are one way we protect homes, schools, offices, industrial facilities, retail businesses and entertainment venues. Each day, code officials dedicate themselves to creating and sustaining safe and sustainable built environments. Learn more about Building Safety Month from the ICC. Building safety officials save lives
City code officials, reviewers and inspectors with the Development Services Department work every day to safeguard our communities. Through permits, plan review and inspections the city ensures that developments adhere to regulations that prevent accidents and ensure that buildings are safe for occupancy. Kids start learning the basics of building safety at an early age. The ICC has a library of resources to help parents, teachers and others in the community teach kids about what building safety professionals do and how they make our homes and communities safer for everyone.

Fire sprinkler systems are lifesaving technology
Fire sprinkler installed in a ceiling
When a fire breaks out, every second counts. Fire sprinkler systems respond immediately by activating automatically to release water to control and extinguish fire and flames before they can spread. Studies have shown that buildings equipped with sprinkler systems experience significantly fewer casualties and less severe property damage compared to those without. The rapid response not only contains fires, but it also drastically decreases the risk of injury and death by providing time for building occupants to evacuate safely.
