Thank you, Seattle!

"We appreciate you, Seattle voters, for passing the ""Seattle Transportation Levy" [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/about-us/funding/levy-proposal?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]" with over 66% voting yes. This funding will help us maintain and modernize city streets with paving, bridge repairs, sidewalk construction, connections to light rail, and much more. Get ready for winter weather – here’s how

Winter is here as we saw with last week’s major windstorm. As the rainy season arrives and temperatures drop, the chance for landslides and snow and ice increases. Be prepared with the right supplies, tools for getting around, and if able, help a neighbor in need. Together we can keep people and goods moving.

Visit our winter weather website [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/safety-first/winter-weather-response?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] for all the best information at your fingertips!

* *Be Prepared: *To prepare and assist [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/safety-first/winter-weather-response/how-to-prepare-and-assist?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] in your neighborhood, talk to your neighbors to see who may need help during a storm. Make a community plan to ensure that all the sidewalks on the block get shoveled. Be sure to have a shovel and salt ready, or know who to ask if you need a helping hand.

* *Know Before You Go:* See Seattle’s snow plow routes map [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/safety-first/winter-weather-response/snow-plow-routes?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]. During snow events, use this online map to see real-time updates [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/safety-first/winter-weather-response/snow-plow-routes?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] about street conditions and which streets we’ve recently plowed.

* *Important Bookmarks:* Visit the SDOT winter weather webpage [ http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/safety-first/winter-weather-response?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] for more information about how to get around safely when it snows [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/safety-first/winter-weather-response/getting-around?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]. Visit King County Metro’s winter guide website [ https://kingcounty.gov/en/dept/metro/rider-tools/snow-guide?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] for transit information. You can also check out the City of Seattle’s winter storm response website [ https://www.seattle.gov/winter-weather?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] for resources beyond transportation, like home and pet safety, power outages and utilities, and warming shelters.

Last week, we held a snow plow practice to test equipment and ensure our snowplow drivers are familiar with their routes. This training exercise is one example of the work that occurs year-round to prepare [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/safety-first/winter-weather-response/sdot-is-prepared?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] for winter storms and ensure our crew members are in good practice. You can read more in our blog post [ https://sdotblog.seattle.gov/2024/11/18/snowplow-practice-run-prepare-for-winter-weather/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ].

You can count on us to respond to winter storms, but we can’t be everywhere at once. It’s everyone’s responsibility to clear ice and snow from the sidewalks around their homes and businesses to keep communities safe. It’s not just the law, it’s the right thing to do so that people of all ages and abilities can travel safely following a snowstorm if it becomes necessary.

Major bike and safety upgrades move forward in South Seattle
Groundbreaking events in Georgetown

Two groundbreaking ceremonies in Georgetown. Left is the Georgetown to Downtown Safety Project, and right is the Georgetown to South Park Connection Project.

We continue making progress in delivering six major projects to enhance bike connectivity and travel safety in the south end. The most recent to begin construction are the Georgetown to Downtown Safety Project [ https://sdotblog.seattle.gov/2024/10/30/georgetown-to-downtown-safety-project-breaks-ground/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] and the Georgetown to South Park Connection Project [ https://sdotblog.seattle.gov/2024/11/22/georgetown-to-south-park-connection-project-construction-begins/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ].

This builds on the momentum of other projects completed or in progress, which include the MLK Jr. Way Safety Project [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/programs/bike-program/protected-bike-lanes/mlk-protected-bike-lane?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] (completed in July), Beacon Ave S & 15th Ave S Safety Project [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/programs/bike-program/protected-bike-lanes/beacon-hill-bike-route?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ], East Marginal Way Corridor Improvement Project [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/programs/freight-program/east-marginal-way-corridor-improvement-project?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ], and West Marginal Way SW Safety Corridor Project [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/programs/bridges-stairs-and-other-structures/bridges/west-seattle-bridge-program/west-marginal-way-sw-improvements?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ].

Together, these projects will make it safer and easier for you to bike and scoot through South Seattle, Downtown, and other destinations in the city, while making travel safer and more predictable for everyone.

Did you know? A new off-leash dog area is coming soon to Georgetown!

We’re working closely with Seattle Parks and Recreation to build a new off-leash area at the site of the former Georgetown “Flume” property [ https://www.seattle.gov/parks/about-us/projects/georgetown-flume-off-leash-area-development?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]. We look forward to beginning construction on this new community resource. Just look how happy this dog at our recent groundbreaking event is to see the project moving forward!
