Construction update
We appreciate the excitement about the recently constructed bike lanes on 15th Ave S, but we must remind people that the* bike lanes remain closed until this spring,* after crews complete final striping and signal work. We recently installed additional signage instructing bikes to merge with traffic to make this clearer to travelers. We are working to open the bike lanes as soon as possible.
Over the next few weeks, you'll see our crews doing the following work throughout the project area:
*15th Ave S*
* Installing signs from S Charles St to S College St
*Beacon Ave S*
* *Weekend work from 15th Ave S to S Spokane St: *Removing asphalt as early as May 3 and 4 and repaving as early as May 10 and 11 (weather dependent). Paving will take place May 17 and 18 if weather causes schedule changes. *Parking restrictions will be in place Friday to Monday for the next 3 weeks.*
* *Weekend work near S Hanford St:* Reconstructing roadway at the new transit islands as early as April 26 and 27.
* *Weekend work near S Lander St:* Pouring concrete for sidewalks and transit islands on the east side of Beacon Ave S as early as April 26 and 27
* Restoring roadway, sidewalks, and curb ramps on the west side of Beacon Ave S near S Hinds St
* Pouring sidewalk and bus shelter foundation on the northeast corner of the Beacon Ave S and S Spokane St intersection
* Restoring sidewalk on the northwest corner of the Beacon Ave S and S Spokane St intersection
* Evaluating tree roots near S Horton St
* One tree was identified for removal. This tree is the first tree south of S Hanford St on the east side of Beacon Ave S. We exhausted all other options before resorting to removal, including ramping the sidewalk over the tree roots, reducing the sidewalk width to avoid the rotos, and trimming the tree roots. These options were not viable because the tree roots are too high to create ADA-accessible sidewalks over them and the health of the tree would be compromised.
*Please note that some of this work is weather dependent and subject to schedule changes.

We will begin preparing the work site mid-March, which includes setting up the staging area under the bridge off S Dearborn St. Once preparations are complete, crews will start removing the old paint this spring. The repainting process is set to begin this summer and will continue through 2026.

Tree Removal Update
April 25 update: One tree was identified for removal.
February 28 update: Tree evaluation work is moving slower than originally anticipated. So far, we have evaluated trees on the west side of Beacon Ave S from S Stevens St to S Hanford St, and none were identified for removal. We are continuing to evaluate trees as sidewalk repair progresses. We still intend to hold a tree walk once most of the tree evaluations are complete.
We may need to remove more trees than the three we initially identified during design phase. As we began sidewalk repair work on the project corridor, we're finding that more trees have root systems that are too shallow and overgrown under the sidewalk. If we exhaust all other design options to build ADA-compliant sidewalks, we will need to post and remove trees. We are trying our best to retain as many trees as possible. We will continue to inspect tree roots as we move southward with our sidewalk repair work and will share additional information about tree removals as they become available.
