RapidRide J Line Construction News: December 20, 2024

The RapidRide J Line project will bring significant improvements to the University District, Eastlake, South Lake Union, and Belltown neighborhoods. These enhancements will make it easier to commute, attend classes at the University of Washington, access medical care, or visit local businesses by creating a more efficient and convenient travel experience across these key areas of the city.

Our focus is on modernizing and maintaining reliable transit connections for Seattle’s growing communities. We will improve roads, sidewalks, curb ramps, lighting, drainage, and traffic signals. Additionally, we will install protected bike lanes and replace the watermain on Eastlake Ave E. These enhancements are essential for supporting local businesses, improving access to housing, and fostering vibrant, connected communities.

Here's what is included in this email update:

* Stormwater Work Progressing on Eastlake Ave E
* Parking Between E Boston St and E Lynn St
* Utility Verification and Drainage Work on Fairview Ave N
* Construction and Online Drop-In Sessions Paused for Holidays

Stormwater Work Progressing North on Eastlake Ave E

In areas where stormwater work is complete on Eastlake Ave E, crews are installing temporary pavement for traffic to use the west side of the road. This allows crews to shift traffic and access the rest of the road for the upcoming watermain replacement. Meanwhile, stormwater main line replacement work is progressing north along Eastlake Ave E from E Blaine St to E Newton St. As part of this work, crews will trench across Yale Pl E to install stormwater drainage. You can access driveways and parking on Yale Pl E via E Newton St while this work is under way. No parking signage has been placed along Yale PL E to make it easier for garbage pick up and delivery services. We will remove those restrictions as soon as work is complete.

Stormwater work will progress northbound to E Lynn St in the coming weeks. Completion of the stormwater work at E Lynn St will conclude the mainline stormwater work, and we will then shift our focus towards the installation of inlets and connections to the main line.

"Stormwater drainage work requires excavation, shoring up trenches and taking dirt in and out along a busy road."

Parking Between E Boston St and E Lynn St

As stormwater work moves north, so do parking closures. We have placed no parking signs on Eastlake Ave E between E Boston St and E Lynn St. Keeping parked cars off the road makes it easier for crews to complete drainage work, and shift traffic lanes safely around work zones. Load zones in no-parking areas are shifted to the nearest side street.

Utility Verification and Drainage Work on Fairview Ave N

We have begun utility verification on Fairview Ave N and Yale Ave N near the entrance of Fred Hutch. Expect to see crews working in sidewalks and planting strips for the new few weeks.

Starting in January, crews will begin drainage work on Fairview Ave N. Cyclists can anticipate a closure of the bike ramp on the southern end of the Fairview Ave N Bridge. During this closure a temporary ramp will be put in place 20 feet north. After completion of the work, we will restore the area to its original condition.

"The area in blue will be closed to allow crews to complete drainage work. The area in red shows the location of the temporary bike ramp."

Construction and Online Drop-In Sessions Paused for Holidays

We will pause construction between December 25 and January 2 so that crews can spend time with their friends and families. We will also pause our weekly online drop-in sessions and resume them on Thursday, January 9. We hope you have a wonderful holiday season!
