RapidRide J Line Header
Our RapidRide J Line project will make it easier and more convenient for you to get around the University District, Eastlake, South Lake Union, and Belltown. Whether you’re commuting to work, heading to class at the University of Washington, visiting the doctor, or shopping at local businesses, these upgrades will help you travel faster and more reliably.
As part of the project, we’ll upgrade streets, sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, streetlights, and traffic signals. We’ll also add protected bike lanes and replace the water main on Eastlake Ave E. These upgrades will support our local businesses, make it easier for you to get to housing, and help create safer, more connected neighborhoods for everyone.

* Eastlake Construction
* Fairview Ave N Construction
* Business Spotlight: Datza Studios

"*We are working in many locations at once. Our work involves heavy machinery, loud noises, vibrations, and dust. We usually work from 7 AM to 5 PM, but we may start as early as 4 AM to allow enough time for new concrete to cure. We may also need to work weekends and nights to complete certain activities. *"

University District Construction
*Paving and bus stop closure on Roosevelt Way NE*
As early as Wednesday, October 22, we will begin demolishing and paving on the west side of Roosevelt Way NE between NE 41st St and NE 43rd St. One southbound traffic lane will stay open during this work, which is expected to last several weeks. If you are riding a bike, you will need to use the sidewalks during construction.
This work will require us to temporarily close the southbound bus stop near the UW Clinic at NE 42nd St and Roosevelt Way NE. Alternative stops are available at the following locations:
* Southbound Roosevelt Way NE and NE 45th St (Stop #9605): Routes 31, 32, and 65
* Westbound NE 42nd St and 8th Ave NE (Stop #5402): Routes 31 and 32
* Eastbound NE Campus Pkwy and University Wy NE (Stop #9575): Route 65
Our work on the west side of Roosevelt Way NE will also require us to move the UW Clinic’s shuttle bus pick-up and drop-off area to the north side of NE 42nd St. Please see the map below for more details.

*Electrical work and sidewalk installation on 11th Ave NE and NE 42nd St*
Starting as soon as Monday, October 20, we will begin installing new electrical lines under the east side of the intersection at 11th Ave NE and NE 42nd St. Crews will demolish one corner of the sidewalk at a time as they install the electrical infrastructure. They will detour traffic around the work area, and signs will guide pedestrians around the work area. This work is expected to take several weeks to complete.
*Sidewalk installation on 11th Ave NE *
Crews are building new sidewalks on the east side of 11th Ave NE between NE 43rd St and NE 45th St. During this work, people on bikes can use a temporary northbound bike lane, and pedestrians can access the west sidewalk.
*Pole foundations in the University District*
We are continuing to install pole foundations in several areas of the University District, including:
* Roosevelt Way NE between NE 43rd St and NE 42nd St.
* Eastlake Ave NE between NE Campus Parkway and NE 41st St.
* 11th Ave NE between NE 43rd St and NE 42nd St.
This work will require temporary sidewalk closures, but access to businesses and driveways will be maintained. We will reroute traffic around the work zone. We will connect light poles to these foundations later in the year.

*The west side of Fuhrman Ave E is open!*
New concrete on Fuhrman Ave E.
"New concrete on Fuhrman Ave E."
After months of hard work, we’ve finished installing new underground utilities, paving the street, and rebuilding sidewalks on the west side of Eastlake Ave E and Fuhrman Ave E. Along the way, our crews ran into some unexpected underground utilities, which required us to coordinate with multiple teams and develop new designs. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we completed this work.
*Upcoming closure of northbound Eastlake Ave E between Harvard Ave E and E Allison St*
As soon as Tuesday, October 28, we will close the northbound lanes of Eastlake Ave E between Harvard Ave E and E Allison St. All northbound traffic will be rerouted onto E Allison St and Harvard Ave E. More information on this closure will be provided soon.
*Paving work along Eastlake Ave E between Harvard Ave E and E Shelby St*
We continue to pave the east side of Eastlake Ave E between Harvard Ave E and E Shelby St. This work will last several weeks. Our team will coordinate with businesses and residents before any driveway impacts occur.
*Water main replacement on Eastlake Ave E*
Crews prepare to install new water main pipes.
"Crews prepare to install new water main pipes."
We continue to install the new water main along the east side of Eastlake Ave E in multiple areas. On the north end, crews will continue to work between E Shelby St and E Edgar St. We have also started work between E Edgar St and E Louisa St. During this time, we will shift traffic around the construction zones.
*Nightwork along Eastlake Ave E at the intersections of E Louisa St, E Lynn St, and E Hamlin St*
During the week of October 20, we will dig across Eastlake Ave E at the intersections of E Louisa St, E Lynn St, and E Hamlin St to install electrical lines. We will work at night to reduce impacts on schools, businesses, and traffic during the day. You may notice some nighttime noise. Crews will keep northbound and southbound traffic moving using a single lane. Please follow all signage and instructions from flaggers. We will keep sidewalks and crosswalks open and we are providing additional information to local schools.
*Demolition on Eastlake Ave E between E Garfield St and E Galer St*
Crews demolish concrete on Eastlake Ave E between E Garfield St and E Galer St.
"Crews demolish concrete on Eastlake Ave E between E Garfield St and E Galer St."
We have shifted traffic between E Garfield St and E Galer St to the east side of Eastlake Ave E as we begin demolishing the west side of Eastlake Ave E in this area. As crews complete this work, vehicles will not be able to access the west side of E Garfield St from Eastlake Ave E. Our team has coordinated with property owners and residents to maintain access to parking lots via Fairview Ave E.
*Demolition on Eastlake Ave E between E Howe St and E Boston St*
Starting as soon as Friday, October 24, we will begin demolishing the east side of Eastlake Ave E between E Howe St and E Boston St. We will work with property owners and residents to maintain driveway access. This work is expected to take multiple months as we remove the old pavement, dig several feet deep, and pour new concrete. Our work involves heavy machinery, so you should anticipate loud noises, vibrations, and dust. We will shift traffic to the west side of Eastlake Ave E during this time.
Fairview Ave N Construction
*Frontage road closure near Fairview Ave N and Yale Ave N*
Crews continue to install new communication utility systems on the west side of Fairview Ave N, along the frontage road between Aloha St and Yale Ave N. Crews are currently working at the Yale Ave N driveway. This work will temporarily limit sidewalk access near Yale Ave N. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be directed onto the frontage road around the work area. Our work will take place on weekdays between 7 AM and 5 PM. We will reopen the affected areas at the end of each workday, and we do not expect any weekend work.
*Sidewalk installation near the east side of Yale Ave N*
Starting as early as October 20, we will install new sidewalks on the east side of Fairview Ave N near Yale Ave N. This work will require us to close the curb lane and direct pedestrians across the street. If you are walking near the work area, please follow our detour signs.
