Thank you for learning about Mouth of Duwamish Wet Weather Facilities this year! 

King County kicked off the planning phase for Mouth of Duwamish Wet Weather Facilities in early 2024. This effort will control overflows from five Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) outfalls. These CSO outfalls are at the mouth of the Duwamish River, near SODO and West Seattle (Industrial District West).

This year, we made progress towards identifying a solution that meets regulatory requirements. We started with dozens of options. Each option included new facilities, like storage tanks, tunnels, pipes, or treatment stations. We are considering five factors as we work to narrow our options: community and social impacts, cost, schedule, operations and maintenance, and environmental impacts. We will propose the best solution for this effort in spring 2025.

As the project was getting started, the King County team worked to raise awareness of this effort. We planned online and in-person events to meet with community members who live, work, and travel through SODO and West Seattle (Industrial District West). Our commitment to community

You shared, and we listened! This summer, we hosted interviews, outreach events, briefings, an online open house, and virtual public meetings. Our goal was to hear about values in your community. We learned that healthy built and natural environments and family-wage jobs and job trainings are top concerns in SODO and West Seattle (Industrial District West). Learn more about our efforts to support these community values below.






Fall Job Fair and Workforce Training Symposium

King County partnered with the South Seattle College – Georgetown Campus Sustainable Building and Science Technology program to host a job fair in October 2024. We shared information about jobs and paid training opportunities in the fields of clean water, sustainable building, and construction. More than 200 community members attended to join hands-on job demonstrations, learn about King County workforce programs, and meet employers hiring in these fields.

Trick or Tree!

King County and Dirt Corps [ https://www.thedirtcorps.com/ ] hosted the third annual Trick or Tree event at the Highland Park Corner Store in October 2024. We joined the event to support neighborhood greening efforts and raise awareness of Mouth of Duwamish Wet Weather Facilities. Through this event, King County and Dirt Corps gave 150 free native trees to community members and organizations in Highland Park!

What’s next?

We expect the planning phase to end in spring 2025. This phase will result in a proposal for facilities to control Mouth of Duwamish CSO outfalls and meet regulatory requirements. After the planning phase, King County will begin the work to advance the proposal with input from regulatory agencies, including the Washington State Department of Ecology. We will also begin environmental review under the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA).

Once we have a proposed solution, we will share information in the following ways:

* Briefings with community-based organizations
* Project newsletter mailing
