*Spokane St Swing Bridge (low bridge) closed this weekend (August 23-24) to people driving, walking, rolling, and biking*
*Summary:*
To keep the Spokane St Swing Bridge, commonly known as the low bridge, reliably operating, *starting tomorrow (August 23), from 7am, until 10pm on Sunday (August 24),* the low bridge will be closed for people driving, biking, rolling, and walking. During this time, crews will repair a part of the recently installed turn cylinder called a "manifold," which helps control how fast the bridge moves. Additional work on this project is expected to continue through 2025
* Planning, design, and construction for the initial phase of the Spokane St Swing Bridge Rehabilitation Program [ https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDEsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMjEyMjkuNjkwMDAxMTEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5zZWF0dGxlLmdvdi90cmFuc3BvcnRhdGlvbi9wcm9qZWN0cy1hbmQtcHJvZ3JhbXMvcHJvZ3JhbXMvYnJpZGdlcy1zdGFpcnMtYW5kLW90aGVyLXN0cnVjdHVyZXMvYnJpZGdlcy93ZXN0LXNlYXR0bGUtYnJpZGdlLXByb2dyYW0vc3Bva2FuZS1zdC1zd2luZy1icmlkZ2UtaW1wcm92ZW1lbnQtcHJvamVjdHM_dXRtX21lZGl1bT1lbWFpbCZ1dG1fc291cmNlPWdvdmRlbGl2ZXJ5In0.VjuJaOrpJCslE9CQkalI0CvQyVbI9SQRmp6ZhGWbVdQ/s/1812472307/br/151486445825-l?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] took place from 2020 to 2022.

The bridge span is opened and closed by turn cylinders that push and pull on the lift cylinder
"The bridge span is opened and closed by turn cylinders that push and pull on the lift cylinder."
Here are some options to get around during the closure:
*Riding the bus*
The bus provides a reliable option to get to many destinations on both sides of the Duwamish Waterway without driving. Buses travel via the high bridge and can be used by people walking, riding conventional bikes, and in wheelchairs.
We encourage you to visit King County Metro’s trip planner page [ https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDIsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMjEyMzAuNjkwMjg3NTEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3RyaXBwbGFubmVyLmtpbmdjb3VudHkuZ292Lz91dG1fbWVkaXVtPWVtYWlsJnV0bV9zb3VyY2U9Z292ZGVsaXZlcnkjL2FwcC90cmlwcGxhbm5pbmcifQ.RF3iiKPZSYAXgHgO6TbP6YxJkjEJeNOSIWzDTCtlEhQ/s/1812472307/br/151499749620-l?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] to find the latest bus route and schedule information for your trip.
*Riding the Water Taxi*
King County operates the West Seattle Water Taxi [ https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDMsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMjEyMzAuNjkwMjg3NTEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL2tpbmdjb3VudHkuZ292L2RlcHRzL3RyYW5zcG9ydGF0aW9uL3dhdGVyLXRheGkvd2VzdC1zZWF0dGxlLmFzcHg_dXRtX21lZGl1bT1lbWFpbCZ1dG1fc291cmNlPWdvdmRlbGl2ZXJ5In0.Ei8Nmw6hc5HHFdnaHS160xuoVy2kZiEuVtZL67pRF10/s/1812472307/br/151499749620-l?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ], which provides direct service from West Seattle to downtown Seattle, with full service 7 days per week through the winter, except for select holidays. Their large vessels can store up to 26 bikes at a time.
*Driving or carpooling on the West Seattle Bridge (high bridge)*
The high bridge remains open to drivers and offers a direct connection for many travelers to reach their destinations. There are currently no restrictions on vehicle access. This bridge is not accessible to pedestrians or people biking. Signs are posted in various locations stating this.
*Walking, biking, and rolling*
People walking, biking, and rolling will not be able to use the low bridge to cross the Duwamish Waterway during the closure. There are several other routes to get around the closure by bike, including West Marginal Way SW [ https://us-west-2.protection.sophos.com/?d=lnks.gd&h=854c6c6a07f147cd8468bcab9d084598&i=NjVlMjQ4NzM0ODMzNjA1ZjY4NzdkMzdk&p=m&s=AVNPUEhUT0NFTkNSWVBUSVaiFoiqX5ybopHZjcODhPKpKhzdcYuPHKZYQTaBKC_ith3rU1j7drIM3RRO4coWMP8&t=MCtvWG9FM3k5R2tKQkl4UEZXOXZZNkVEUEFWZ0JuaHhLQXFIV2d1RDYvUT0%3D&u=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%3D%3D&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] where we recently added permanent safety barriers to the protected bike lane. Check out our Bike Map [ https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/ee5b243b03e24a0691b4f7336ada2b2f?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] to see where there are bike facilities. Transit is another reliable option for people walking and rolling to use during the closure.
*Freight and business access to Harbor Island and Terminal 5*
Truck drivers, Port workers, and other people who need to access Harbor Island and Terminal 5 are still able to do so, though they need to be aware of the detour route before making their trip. Access to Harbor Island remains available from the east via SW Spokane St, before reaching the Spokane St Swing Bridge, as shown in the map below. For those traveling to Terminal 5 from the east, please use alternate routes, such as the West Seattle high bridge.

*What’s Next*
Over the next year, additional short-term closures will be required as part of our ongoing preventative maintenance work on this bridge. That means that in the future, the low bridge will be closed again to people walking, biking, rolling, and driving.
