Mayor AWC

Thursday morning, I was in Olympia for the Association of Washington Cities Mayor's conference. There were some extremely informative seminars on public safety, housing, community engagement, transportation and public works funding. It was fun to sit in on those seminars with other Washington city Mayors.

Chief's Award of Exceptional Duty

________________________________________________________________________

Chief's award

Tuesday night, Chief Padilla presented the Chief's Award of Exceptional Duty to Kent Police Officer Fisher, and Detectives M. Wilson and C. James for their heroic actions during a shooting.

On November 8, 2023, Kent Officers were dispatched to a busy retail shopping area on the East Hill of Kent, in response to a 911 call of a male suspect shooting a gun. Multiple Kent Officers responded, several of whom were headed home after working their shifts and turned around to help.

Officer Fisher is being specifically recognized for being one of the Officers who was headed home but heard the call and responded back to Kent. He did this without being told because he understood the gravity of the situation, and the need for multiple Officers to contain the suspect, de-escalate, and protect the surrounding community. Upon his arrival, he was part of the rescue team that went into harm's way to safely evacuate innocent bystanders who were trapped inside the business that the suspect was standing in front of. He formed a rescue team with Officers Bertolacci, Axelson, Bartolo and Sgt. Lontz, and they were able to shepherd multiple people to safety.

Detective M. Wilson was also on his way home when the call was aired, and turned back around to help. He brought his expertise in less lethal force options to the discussion on how to safely take the suspect into custody and was one of the Officers who physically detained the suspect while he was still armed.

Detective C. James is one of our top negotiators, and she was dispatched to the scene to help de-escalate the suspect and convince him to surrender. Her communication skills are excellent, and she has a strong ability to effectively reach people in crisis. She tirelessly negotiated with the suspect for a lengthy period and was able to successfully talk him down.

With great training and dedicated Officers, this resulted in the best possible outcome.
